1. Visual Book Summary
Happiness is something that people seek to find, yet what defines happiness can vary for each of us. Happiness, Aristotle suggested, could be achieved through the golden mean, which involves finding a balance between deficiency and excess.
The book recommendation of this edition is Happiness Hypothesis by Jonathan Haidt
Haidt uses the image of an elephant and a rider as a metaphor to depict the human condition in which two systems govern our behavior. One, represented by the rider, is reason and rational thinking. The other, represented by the elephant, is human emotion. Our emotion and reason interact to produce overt human behavior. If we want to live a life governed by certain moral principles, we have to “train” the elephant rather than persuade it using reason.
Here is my Visual book Summary along with some of my favorite lines from the book.
Each of us thinks we see the world directly, as it really is. We further believe that the facts as we see them are there for all to see, therefore others should agree with us. If they don’t agree, it follows either that they have not yet been exposed to the relevant facts or else that they are blinded by their interests and ideologies.
Work on your strengths, not your weaknesses. Life offers so many chances to use one tool instead of another, and often you can use a strength to get around a weakness.
Finding fault with yourself is also the key to overcoming the hypocrisy and judgmentalism that damage so many valuable relationships. The instant you see some contribution you made to a conflict, your anger softens—maybe just a bit, but enough that you might be able to acknowledge some merit on the other side.
2. Infographics - Happiness Spectrum
